In this season of political fervor, as our presidential election draws near, we are asking a lot of questions. This will mark the 44th president since the formation of the United States. There have been substantially more kings since the formation of the earth. We ask a lot of questions because we want to make sure the one in power will use his power to “rule” the way we want him to rule. I don’t know if we use the term “rule” associated with a president like other parts of the world historically have with a king.
Psalm 103:19 (The Message) says, “God has set HIS throne in heaven; He rules over us all. He’s the King” This title of King is given to Him by others and himself throughout Scripture.
I have never been in a country that was ruled by a king, but I understand the concept of kingship, a concept refering to an all declaring authority. A king would demand the political act of allegiance.
In Dan Wilt’s teaching “Essentials in Worship Theology-The Nature of God”, he says, “For the early Church, worship was a political act. The declaration, ‘Jesus is Lord’ was a direct affront to the common phrase of the day, ‘Caesar is Lord’. This historical reality speaks loudly to me. I never considered my worship of Jesus to be a political act. I need to shift my understanding of worship to more centrally include actions of allegiance, loyalty, surrender, commitment and “acknowledge that actions, and not personal feelings, are the primary indicator that we have chosen to follow God”.
